In heavy-duty manufacturing, there are basically two kinds of vacuum coating systems used during production. These two systems accomplish some of the same tasks, but how they perform their duties makes a big difference. There is a definite question of which is best for your situation, but you can make a more informed decision once you understand the differences.

Thermal Systems

A thermal evaporation system superheats materials that will be used to coat a substrate. The substrate receives the coating rather passively as the materials settle. The chamber is cooled, and the materials harden on the substrate to form a thin coat. There isn’t much pressure involved, so this process isn’t useful if you need to add heavy layers of coating to something. Evaporation also has limits on the materials you can use, and temperature sensitive substrates can break down during the process if the manufacturer isn’t careful.

Sputter Systems

A sputter deposition system is generally more expensive than a thermal system, but it can add several important benefits. For one, sputtering allows for better step coverage. Even though sputtering is a complex process, it’s also easy to replicate and automate.

Vacuum metallization

When you want to apply a metal coating to plastic, you have to use a special process known as vacuum metallization. This technique controls the temperatures so that you don’t accidentally melt the plastic down as you try to coat it with molten metal. Instead, the metal is super-heated until it breaks down into a molecular product.

The manufacturer places the metallic coating into a vacuum sealed chamber. Then heat is applied until the metal breaks down. The molecules of that super heated metal bounce off the walls of the chamber until settling onto the substrate. The result is an extremely thin film of metal that completely covers the plastic substrate.

Payload Construction

You will need an arm to hold the payload that you intend to attach to your high altitude weather balloon, but there are some weight considerations to take into account. In the US, you are restricted to a payload that does not exceed 12 pounds. That twelve pounds must be distributed across the box your payload is housed within, the data logger your payload uses to capture data, and any other attachments you decide to add.

Balloon Setup

Begin in a flat and wide-open space, with all of the components of your balloon kit spread out on a table. Assemble your payload, securing the weather balloon camera to the arm where it can get a good view as it ascends. Also keep in mind that the size of your balloon will affect the volume of gas it will hold, so larger balloons are likely to travel a longer distance and reach a greater height.

Launch Site

The site that you choose should be free from objects that will impede your flight path. Power lines, trees and other obstructions can cause your balloon to catch on its flight path, stopping the journey entirely. Also be sure that you launch on a clear day with low wind speeds. Follow the flight path of your balloon carefully with your GPS unit, and be prepared to make a trek to retrieve the payload.
