This week’s TED2012 conference isn’t all talk — sometimes the videos features speak for themselves. Check out this phenomenal one from the University of Pennsylvania starring a number of nano quadrotors playing the James Bond theme by banging percussion, hitting the piano and strumming a guitar. The room in the video has infrared lights and cameras and the ‘copters are outfitted with reflectors, making it possible to plot their position. The result is technical wizardary worthy of Q himself. Check it out after the break. LG’s demonstrating LTE voice-to-video call switching at MWC

February 28, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Your friend calls you up to have a little gloat: not only did they just get a Mike Tyson-style face tattoo, but they’ve also snuck into the Xbox prototype lab . Of course, if you demand proof, you’ll have to end the call and fire up a video chat — or at least that’s how it used to be. Soon you’ll be able to flip seamlessly using LG’s new LTE-based voice-to-video switching. The same technology also lets you share video over super-fast mobile internet in real-time as it’s being recorded. It’s all compliant with industry standards (hopefully meaning it’ll be widely adopted) and we’ll first see them on LG’s smartphones released later in the year. Toyota and Samsung are pairing up to get the latter’s smartphones to work perfectly with the former’s vehicles. The duo will launch Samsung Mobile Car Application to sync your Android device to the in-vehicle-infotainment (IVI) systems of modern cars. You’ll be able to use voice control and improve the accuracy of your GPS by hooking it up to mobile internet. At the minute it’s just an announcement, we won’t see any products entering the market until the second quarter of the year. They just wanted to tease, those lovable scamps. Yes it’s the LG Optimus Vu , and we got a chance to play with it! The verdict? It’s quite lovely. The design is simple but attractive, and the build quality / materials are impressive. There’s no doubt this is a thin and wide device — just like the Samsung Galaxy Note , two hands are the name of the game here. Is it a phone or a tablet? Tae a look at our gallery below and judge for yourself. We’ll have more impressions and a hands-on video for you soon. Sony plans largest ad campaign in ‘many years’ to launch new Xperia smartphones

February 26, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Sony didn’t just reveal some new smartphones at its Mobile World Congress press event today. It also took the opportunity to announce that it will launching what Sony Mobile CMO Steve Walker describes as “by far the largest brand advertising campaign that we have run for many years.” He went on to say that Sony would be “significantly increasing” its marketing investment in 2012, but failed to get any more specific than that, noting only that the company would be “engaging consumers in new and very creative ways.” There’s also no word on when that campaign might start, but the company’s two latest smartphones are set to roll out sometime in the second quarter of this year. Sony officially debuts Xperia U at MWC 2012

February 26, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Frankly, Sony hasn’t done much to stem the flow of Xperia U leaks pre-MWC, so we can’t say we were all too surprised when the handset made its debut on stage today in Barcelona. The 3.5-inch phone offers up a Reality Display, a 1GHz dual-core processor and five megapixel camera. According to Sony, the handset should get up to six and a half hours of talk time and will, sadly, be rocking Gingerbread at launch, though for what it’s worth, a planned upgrade to ICS has been announced. The Xperia S’s younger sibling will be hitting shelves some time in Q2. We’ll be sure to give some hands-on impressions of the forthcoming phone as soon as humanly possible. Google Drive SDK, Gmail integration hinted at in Google Docs source code

February 25, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Still wondering if Mountain View’s Google Drive service will launch as a Google Docs rebranding ? The folks at the Google Operating System blog have some code you might want to peek at, then. Apparently the Docs’ source code mentions an SDK connected to the upcoming Google Drive, opening the door for third party app support. The code hints at deeper Gmail integration too, “Say goodbye to email attachments and hello to real time collaboration,” it says, “Drag anything shared with you to My Drive for easy access.” If Drive turns out to be more than a hefty Docs update, at the very least it seems clear that the new service will play nice with El Goog’s other web apps — after all, isn’t that what that consolidated privacy policy is supposed to be about? Telus confirms March 2nd launch for Nokia Lumia 800

February 25, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Canadians may still have to wait a bit longer for some official word of the Lumia 900′s possible debut in the country (the latest rumors suggest it may be heading to Rogers), but there’s now at least a firm date for the launch of its slightly smaller counterpart. Telus confirmed today that the Nokia Lumia 800 will be available on March 2nd (in your choice of black, cyan or magenta), although it’s unfortunately still not providing a price. As you may recall, Nokia’s other new Windows Phone, the Lumia 710 , made its Canadian debut on Rogers earlier this month, where it can be had for as little as $50 on-contract or just over $250 off-contract.
