Researchers turn your smartphone into a virtual projector

January 22, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Pico projectors are an easy way to increase the screen real estate of your mobile phone, but what if you’d rather not carry one around in your pocket or bulk up your phone’s slim profile with a slip on solution ? Well, a team of intrepid researchers may have come up with an elegant solution to your problem that can work with any smartphone and external display: virtual projection. The system works by using a central server that constantly takes screenshots of the external display and compares them with the images from the phone’s camera to track its location. It then replicates what’s on the handset’s screen, while allowing you to add multiple image windows and position and rotate them as you see fit. Additionally, multiple users can collaborate and virtually project pictures or videos onscreen at the same time. Intrigued? See it in action for yourself in the video after the break. Eye-Fi CEO slams SD Association’s eerily similar Wireless SD card standard, says his IP is being violated

January 21, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Yuval Koren is not pleased. For those unaware, he’s the CEO of Eye-Fi , the company that has practically written the rules on embedding WiFi into SD cards . If you blinked last week, you probably missed the SD Association’s announcement that it had created a new Wireless LAN SD standard that would effectively give just about anyone the ability to add Eye-Fi abilities to their SD cards. As it turns out, Eye-Fi’s none too pleased about it, and Koren has gone so far as to publicly admit that the standard is seriously infringing upon highly valuable Eye-Fi technology. To quote: “As [the SDA's standard is] currently written, essential Eye-Fi patented technology would be violated by anyone implementing this draft specification.” Bold . He goes on to explain that his company has invested “tens of millions of dollars and several years to create unique technology that lets people wirelessly transfer photos and videos directly from their camera and mobile devices,” and calls the SDA protocol “flat out misrepresentation.” He’s effectively calling for the SD Association to either pony up and license Eye-Fi’s tech, or scrap the “standard” and rewrite it using something else altogether. The full letter is posted up after the break, with absolutely no elation to be found. FCC Fridays: January 20, 2012

We here at Engadget tend to spend a lot of way too much time poring over the latest FCC filings , be it on the net or directly on the ol’ Federal Communications Commission’s site. Since we couldn’t possibly (want to) cover all the stuff that goes down there, we’ve gathered up an exhaustive listing of every phone and / or tablet getting the stamp of approval over the last week . Enjoy! Continue reading FCC Fridays: January 20, 2012 FCC Fridays: January 20, 2012 originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 20 Jan 2012 23:24:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds . Would you like to make more money? Sure, we all would, and a great way to do that is to get a better education. There was a time when you had to go to schools or rely on shady mail-order diplomas. Now you can use your iPad and get the same thing with the new iTunes U app . It’s an extension of the existing iTunes U service, which has been around for about four years despite few people knowing anything about it. This new apps should change that. Join us for a full exploration of why. Apple’s iBooks 2 e-textbooks pack tons of info, take up tons of your iPad’s memory

January 19, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Apple just got done unveiling its new iBooks 2 platform , letting us in on its plan to revamp education (in part) through its fancy new e-textbooks . These digital volumes look beautiful and come at a relatively meager monetary cost ($14.99), but a quick perusal of the textbooks available in iTunes reveals they’ll take a sizable chunk of your iPad’s memory. The current lineup of eight texts range in size from 800MB to 2.77GB, so folks looking to grab a full semester’s worth of materials may have to carry an extra iPad or three to get the job done. Not an ideal solution, but a few Apple slates are still easier to schlep across campus than those massive texts you’re used to, right? ZTE reaches for the sky, aims to double phone shipments in 2012

January 18, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Talk about a New Years Resolution: ZTE’s head of handset strategy Lv Qianhao, in an interview with Reuters , mentioned that in 2012 his company expects to double the number of smartphone shipments made last year, as well as expand its Windows Phone efforts. While we’re not completely certain as to what that specific number was, Lv stated that it far exceeded its target of 12 million. Regardless of how much it shipped last year, we can’t imagine it would be terribly easy to double it, but it signifies ZTE’s intent to grow and expand in markets like the US and China. This news seems to coincide with the company’s plans to introduce high-end LTE-capable smartphones in the US market in the middle of this year. Does this mean the OEM will be pushing hard to gain more acceptance from stateside carriers? If it results in new top-notch devices coming into the market, then we sure hope so.

Coby unveils its family of Ice Cream Sandwich slates, we go hands-on (video)

January 16, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

It’s hard to tell whether CES 2012 beat out last years show for tablet numbers, but there were plenty of slabs less likely to throttle your wallet in 2012. Coby has leapt onto that very bandwagon, with a whole slew of tablets. Several, but not all, made their first appearance at this year’s CES and we were itching to see how they would stack up against some very price-savvy devices. We were informed (several times) that these were still prototypes, but user experience differed substantially between models. Budget tablet fans can check out our impressions and a brief video summary of the Coby clan right after the break. CES 2012: interview roundup (video)

January 16, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

The Engadget stage was home to many an interview at this year’s CES . Many, many interviews. Given the deluge of guests we hosted in Las Vegas this year, you could be forgiven for not keeping up — for throwing up your hands in exasperation and making a sandwich to heal the hurt. You could , but you won’t. That’s because this year, we thought it’d be a good idea to corral all of our CES 2012 interviews into one big metallic box, and hand-pick only the plumpest, juiciest and most eyebrow-arching ones for your enjoyment. We then took those select few and put them in a smaller, spotlit box, which was affixed atop the aforementioned metallic box with a butterfly shaped bow and maybe some duck fat. Add some mood lighting, a splash of bourbon, and voil
