Cedar Trail may be delayed, new Atoms gone ’til November
August 22, 2011 by publisher · Leave a Comment
If you’ve been waiting to catch a whiff of some Cedar Trail freshness, looks like you’re just gonna hold your breath a little bit longer. DigiTimes is reporting that the next-gen Atom chip has been pushed back from its anticipated September launch to November. Apparently Chipzilla is having issues with the graphics drivers and has been unable to pass Windows 7 certification. The new low-power CPUs should still be ready in time for the holiday season though, and will likely find their way into plenty of netbooks that almost nobody will buy. Skype adds Groupme to social portfolio, sets sights on mobile market

Sure, we’re still waiting for that Microsoft-Skype deal to close, but it looks like Redmond’s about to get more than it initially bargained for. Skype announced today that it has reached an agreement to snatch up Groupme , the mobile group messaging service that made a splash at Google I/O. Outfit head honcho Tony Bates told TechCrunch that Skype needs to invade the mobile space if it hopes to reach its goal of scoring one billion users, and cites Groupme’s “sticky group messaging experience” as the ideal mobile addition to the Skype family. But don’t take our word for it, hit the break and dig the PR for yourself. Caption Contest: No doubt, these two are definitely made for each other
August 20, 2011 by admin · Leave a Comment
Ah, yes. We all know that couple… the ones that don’t speak to each other at dinner because they’re too busy playing Cut the Rope or tweeting. You know ‘em: the texting while walking or texting while driving sort of folks. What can we say? Sometimes you’re locked in an epic battle you can’t walk away from. Perhaps they’re anti-social, or maybe they’re addicted to tech love — but what say you?

HDHomerun Prime CableCARD tuner hands-on
August 19, 2011 by publisher · Leave a Comment
Looking a little different than the prototype we got our hands-on at CES , the retail version of the CableCARD tuner from SiliconDust found its way in front of our camera today. Those who preordered this little guy for $249 should start receiving it shortly , as a series of frustrating delays finally come to an end. We can’t wait to plug this network tuner in and toss up to three HD feeds at a time through our Ethernet cabling and expect most others feel the same way. Check out out our pics in the gallery below, we’ll let you know if the InfiniTV 4 has competition worth worrying about — seems like it, given the price drop — shortly. Third generation Smart Fortwo ditches Tesla powertrain, gains two wheeled cousin

Time and tide wait for no man, folks. Nearly nine months after delivering the first electric Fortwos to snuggie-toting yanks , Daimler’s gone and announced its faster and longer-lasting successor. It’s not an entirely new car mind you, rather an extensive under the hood nip and tuck that replaces the Tesla powertrain with a more potent unit sourced from EM-motive. Up 34 horses from the previous model, the 74 horsepower EV now scoots from 0-60 in a “lively” 13 seconds — a vast improvement over the 23.4 second (!) time of its predecessor. It’s got a larger 17.6kWh battery pack too, which increases range a smidge to 87 miles. And this isn’t another EV trial: it’ll be produced in volume and sold (not leased) in 30 countries at an undisclosed price. Joining the revised city dweller is the matching Smart Ebike.

NYC to trial mobile payment parking system, Lovely Rita looks for a new gig

Tired of burning your hard earned cash on parking fines? You might wanna move to New York City, where the Department of Transportation will soon begin testing a “pay by phone” parking system. The mobile payment technology, which has already been introduced in cities like Washington, DC and Atlanta, essentially allows drivers to pay for their parking spots without ever having to interact with those menacing, metallic meters. After registering online, users would be able to pay for curbside real estate by entering the number of the nearest meter and the amount of time they’d like to purchase into a customized app, or by texting it to the city’s Department of Transportation. The system would also alert users whenever their allotted time is about to expire, allowing them to add more money directly from their handsets, rather than trudge back their cars. At this point, the plan is to roll out the pilot program to some 300 parking spots over the next few months, most likely in outer borough neighborhoods with plenty of commercial outlets and, presumably, automobiles. Samsung Celox gets its moment in the blurrycam spotlight
August 15, 2011 by admin · Leave a Comment
Hey, what have we here? If it isn’t the GT-I9210, a version of the Samsung Celox that we saw the other week . The Samsung Galaxy II-esque LTE handset got the blurrycam treatment on its way to Korean carrier SK Telecom. The rear of the device looks the same as what we saw earlier in the month, only with the carrier’s logo tacked on for good measure. The front, on the other hand, has been redesigned and is now sporting four capacitive keys — not an unusual move for a carrier branded version of one of the company’s smartphones. In light of SK Telecom and Verizon’s use of both LTE and CDMA, perhaps the Celox will join T-Mobile’s rumored Hercules as the other 4.5-inch screened Galaxy S II variant for the US? Fingers crossed.
